For me, the Beatles' "Let It Be" was #1 on the American chart. As for the Brits... well... for whatever reason, they chose to elevate Dana's "All Kinds of Everything." Um... yeah... sure.
Never heard of Dana. Never heard of the song. But, through the wonders of the Internet (and Google), we can all hear it now....
