We used to do a thing around here called the "Dead Bands" series. This particular post wasn't intended to be a new installment in that series, but in doing some requisite research on THE MAYFLIES USA, I discovered with much regret that they had called it quits quite some time ago.
While they were still a going concern, the Mayflies called Chapel Hill, North Carolina home and trafficked in a brand of power pop heavily indebted to BIG STAR. For a more current comparison: think a less-slick/lower-fi FOUNTAINS OF WAYNE and you'll at least be in the ballpark.
Rest in peace, Mayflies USA. We hardly knew ye.

I have shelves of "power pop" music. Most of it is pleasant but not outstanding. That's not true of The Mayflies USA. A truly brilliant band with three songwriters and a great drummer, too! Nice folks, too, when I had the pleasure of meeting them.

P.S. They just might be getting back together!
Inside information... excellent. I agree that much power pop can be disposable. And I hope you're right about a possible Mayflies reunion. If there's new material to be had, I'll hope to provide a preview of it here.
Mayflies USA are amazing-- am so excited they may be getting back together!
Here's another band that reminds me of them (but are still together)-- http://www.immortalrecords.com/page/hrc
They're called Hot Rod Circuit and I'd love to send you some MP3s if you are interested-- let me know!

It is a cool band, a friend of mine I remember came to my house with a record of them, we listened to the album and we both were talking about how good it was.
