MIDNIGHT OIL

(So, what's say we spend another Sunday in Australia....)

Surely you all remember MIDNIGHT OIL They were especially big in the U.S. right around the time I started college. So: nostalgia... big-time.

(But speaking of Australia... I guess everybody knows that a goodly percentage of the first Western settlers of that nation were convicts (English, Scottish, Irish) sent from Great Britain. That all started around 1788. What I'd never realized was that the American Revolution actually played a part in this -- seeing as, from 1718 to 1775, England had been dumping a goodly number of their convicts in America (Maryland, Virginia).

(Apparently, in those days, the UK shipped about 70% of its criminals to the colonies and executed 16% of the rest.)

(And now that I think about it, that seems like a pretty reasonable system -- perhaps worthy of consideration here in the U.S. Canada, after all, has quite a lot of unused, wasted space up there. And it's only fair -- Toronto has been shipping all its trash (literally) to Michigan for going on seven years now.)

(So, let's see... the U.S. currently has approximately 2.2 million prisoners, meaning we'll need to send approximately 1.54 million to Canada and kill 352,000 others. For the first part, I would suggest that we split them into 16 barely noticeable groups of 96,250 each, then distribute them amidst the following Canadian hamlets: Noggin Cove, Berry's Head, St. Margret's Head, Cow Head, Grizzly Bear's Head, Herring Neck, Salmon Arm, Alice Arm, Luke's Arm, Robert's Arm, Joe Batt's Arm, Jerry's Nose, Moose Jaw, Moosehorn, Moose Heights, and Porcupine Plain. Should there be any issues with overflow, a few inmates could always be diverted to Swastika, Ontario, Asbestos, Quebec, or Burnt Church, New Brunswick.)

(Now, as to the second part of our problem... the sad fact is, the United States has only succeeded in killing 1,120 prisoners since the death penalty was reinstated 32 years ago [fun fact: George W. can personally take credit for 14% of those -- and all in just the 6 years he spent as governor of Texas!]. A modest proposal: Perhaps we should start feeding our inmates Canadian and British beef, Chinese baby formula, and Mexican chili peppers.)

(We are, as always, "solutions-oriented" here at "a PLAGUE of ANGELS.")

And now, finally, some music... from Australia... (where 20% of the population is descended from convicts... and where some of that population reside(s) in the hamlets of Tittybong, Bobbin Head, Blowhard, Chinaman's Knob, and Black Charlie's Opening. Oy!)

GRAM RABBIT

And now, ta-da!: More pop inconsequentia to help you while/wile away your Friday....

Joshua Tree, CA's
GRAM RABBIT consist primarily of guitarist TODD RUTHERFORD and singer/multi-instrumentalist JESIKA... um... VON RABBIT. Yes, that's right, JESIKA VON RABBIT. You got a problem with that? (Yeah, me too, actually.)

Gram Rabbit's music has been described as "electro-twang-psychedelia," and I guess that's as good a tag as any. As a vocalist, Ms. Rabbit seems to enjoy taking on different personas. On the charmingly-titled "Bloody Bunnies," she's "naughty-schoolgirl" sassy. On, "Shiny Monster," she's "ice-queen-diva" imperious. On "Angel Song," she lets the mundanely-monikered Mr. Rutherford sidle up to the mic, and the tune's an absolute beaut. File it under "Music to float across a nighttime desert by."

HK 119

Hey, it's Friday. That may not mean all that much to me (all of my days are pretty much the same), but it probably means quite a lot to a lot of you.

So, today: pop songs. Light as air. Consequential as a treatise on vanilla pudding delivered by PARIS HILTON in a North Dakota T.G.I. Friday's. (Unless, of course, Ms. Hilton was wrestling BRITNEY SPEARS in vanilla pudding in a North Dakota T.G.I. Friday's, in which case TMZ, Anderson Cooper 360, and ESPN2 would be all over it.)

First up: HK 119 -- aka HEIDI KILPELAINEN, a UK-based Finn. The song "Mind" starts out sounding like VIOLATOR-era DEPECHE MODE, before going all BLONDIE on the chorus. (I think I hear some ELASTICA in there, as well.) As for "C'est la Vie," the vibe there is more YAZ-meets-THE TING TINGS.

So, today: sort of inconsequential. Mind-less, even. But hey... c'est la vie... it's Friday.

THE BROKEN WEST

Way back on March 28, 2005 -- some nine weeks before this blog was born -- my Mix CD #223 ("Iron Mike Goes All Spanish Teeth on French Asses & Ears") featured the song "Down in the Valley" by an L.A. band called THE BROKEDOWN.

Some 22 months later, an L.A. band called THE BROKEN WEST released an album called I CAN'T GO ON, I'LL GO ON which featured a song called "Down in the Valley." Coincidence? You best not bet your ass on that. If I were you.

Indeed, somewhere in that 22-month interim, the Brokedown became the Broken West -- presto-chango!; shazam-gesundheit! And now, some 19.5 months after that 22-month interim, the Broken West (still calling themselves "the Broken West") have released an album called NOW OR HEAVEN, which does not feature a song called "Down in the Valley" but does, in fact, instead, feature other songs with other titles that may or may not appear on future albums by the same band with a different name. [Might we helpfully suggest: I DONE BROKEDOWN AGAIN, BROKENER NOW THAN WAS EVER BROKE BEFORE, or BROKEBACK MOUNTED MAJESTY (which that last may or not be the title of a gay "alternative" porn "erotic" film that I may or may not have acted in watched "been forced to witness, by kidnappers, at gunpoint" while residing with my Sugar Daddy "Uncle Donnie" in West "North" Hollywood during my 27 years "hours" as a go-go boy "interactive male model").]

CALEXICO

If we're not careful, this could turn into a geography lesson right quick. Yesterday's OKKERVIL RIVER named themselves after a river in Russia -- which, in turn, was named for a 17th-century Swedish military man. (Little is known of this Swedish military man, except that he had an uncanny knack for musical melody and beat out PACHELBEL's "Canon in D" at the 1680 Eurovision Song Contest with his then-revolutionary "Theme for IKEA in G.")

Today's CALEXICO are named for a California city on the U.S./Mexico border. The band, on the other hand, call Tucson, Arizona home. JOEY BURNS and JOHN CONVERTINO are the founders and mainstays; other musical collaborators come and go with the easy-goin' to-and-fro of tumbleweeds.

It should probably come as no surprise, then, that the band's sound has shape-shifted a bit over the years -- moseying from "dusty," lo-fi Americana to Latin-inflected jazz to Mexican mariachi to spaghetti western to film noir to "all of the above" all at once. That Burns' whisper-in-the-wind vocals have played an increasingly large part in the Calexico canon in recent years has served to insert many a bee in many a bonnet of many a long-time fan, but it's the bee's knees for me.

Hell, I'm grateful that these guys have a restless streak in them -- a burr in their collective saddle, as it were. For them to have remained in place -- dusty, lo-fi, and wordless -- these past 11 years would have surely doomed them to obscurity. Like a whisper of wind through a ghost town, too far from the highway to be heard, seen, or saved.

OKKERVIL RIVER

I've gone ahead and used the occasion of the latest OKKERVIL RIVER release (THE STAND INS; 09.09.08) to cobble together a career-spanning compilation of the Austin band's work -- almost half of which you can download below.

In the past, I have written about the band as follows:

"I first discovered [these guys] with the ragged epic "The War Criminal Rises and Speaks," and I've been with them ever since. There's something unhinged about them -- the charmingly circuitous lyrics; WILL SHEFF's cracked, semi-hysterical voice; the warm-yet-eccentric instrumentation."

While Okkervil River's recent releases have been decidedly higher-fi than their earlier efforts, the sense of ramshackle crackle-and-pop remains. These guys, most thankfully, will never be MAROON 5. And, no matter how much they clean up and smooth out the production, Sheff's voice will never be mistaken for a clean, smooth instrument. Compelling, yes. Dramatic, yes. Perpetually navigating the ground between a swoon and a stagger? Yes, just that.

(And, for all you Greedy Guses out there, you can nab the above-mentioned "The War Criminal Rises and Speaks" by nabbing the collection that's nestled [HERE]. Shameless self-promotion? Yeah, I guess, sort of. Except... you know... it's all free, so... whatever.)

SHAUN CASSIDY

Oh, the best-laid plans of mice and men....

I was going to be oh-so-stream-of-consciousness-clever with this one. After dissing sweet 'n' chipmunk-y SHAUN CASSIDY in the previous post, I was going to try and make it up to the man by posting two or three of his two or three '70s hits for your cheese-and-irony-stuffed delectation.

But then I went ahead and actually listened to those two or three '70s hits. Ugh. Ack. Retch. Gag. Bad. Bad. Bad. And not even good, "Showgirls" bad -- just bad, "Striptease" bad. Sometimes, in shooting for "craptastic," you just end up with crap.

So, when it comes to "cheese-and-irony-stuffed delectation," you'll just have to make do with the vintage, Tiger Beat-approved photos above....

DETEKTIVBYRAN

This is shaping up to be a fairly significant week for American releases (in indie circles, at least), but that particular rollout won't begin rolling out until the morrow....

For now, then, we have three Swedes calling themselves DETEKTIVBYRAN. I have decided to translate that as BYRAN THE DETECTIVE. I have decided that "Byran" is Sweden's answer to "Encyclopedia Brown." Or maybe one of "The Hardy Boys," if there was only one Hardy Boy. (Let's go with Parker Stevenson's "Frank," not Shaun Cassidy's "Joe" -- poor Parker had to endure 13 years of marriage to Kirstie Alley.) (Though he did pocket a cool $6 million in the divorce settlement.) (So suck on that, Shaun Cassidy, you one-time, feathered-haired dreamboat, you!)

Byran the Detective... er... Detektivbyran are all about the instrumentals. RATATAT by-way-of BEIRUT, sorta-kinda. High-tech-gypsy-music-box-accordion-oompa-oompa-dance-Dieter's-monkey-dance!

(Oh, and... one last thing I meant to mention...: One of the guys in the band is named ANDERS FLANDERS. Just thought you'd enjoy knowing that.)

ROYAL TREATMENT PLANT

582 days ago, I was sitting three-and-a-half feet to the right of where I am currently sitting, typing the following words into a computer three-and-a-half feet to the right of the computer I am currently typing words into:

"I've been carrying on a one-sided love affair with London's
ROYAL TREATMENT PLANT ever since I first heard their song "You Don't Need Me" back in October of '06. It made my Best Of mix that month, and I still find it a nearly perfect blend of dance/thrash pop/rock."

"Lo and behold, a signature sound -- in an 'empowering,' not 'restrictive' sense -- begins to emerge. SAM's sharp, staccato, sometimes siren-like guitar. TOMMY T's understated, retro, sense-of-menace synth fills. CHRIS and DJ's rumbling, cymbal-crash rhythm section. And, above it all, frontwoman PRINCESS P's playful yet authoritatively aggro vox -- effortlessly escalating from a coo to a caterwaul. BLONDIE as covered by SONIC YOUTH? No, not exactly."

But close enough, apparently, for our purposes at the time. I might also have mentioned the band METRIC as a kindred musical spirit, but I didn't. Until now. 582 days later. When I can also report that, 58 days ago, Royal Treatment Plant released their debut LP, HOPE IS NOT ENOUGH. Some of the title track's guitar work reminded me of the aforementioned "You Don't Need Me," but, honestly, I was a bit taken aback by the borderline-"active rock," power-chord-y accoutrements. I can only hope, going forward, that they hew more closely to the aforementioned Metric model -- and steer clear of the PARAMORE portal to white-trash blandness.

Ah, those prolific Swedes... how we love them....

PELLE CARLBERG just released a new full-length album, THE LILAC TIME. FABIENNE DELSOL/THE BRISTOLS

A lot of things have been coming up "French" around here lately. There was the recent mix, NUREMBERG 1948 -> PARIS 1968. French First Lady CARLA BRUNI made an appearance. We heard from a pop outfit called CLOETTA PARIS. And, of course, we spotlighted THE DOORS, whose lead singer bit the big one in... that's right... Paris. So... what could possibly be next?

Why, FABIENNE DELSOL, that's what (who). Ms. Delsol is originally from France but relocated herself to Great Britain some ten or so years ago. There, she was the lead singer for the short-lived garage band THE BRISTOLS. More recently, she's been singing solo, releasing the LP BETWEEN YOU AND ME back in 2007. Those of you awaiting the new APRIL MARCH record could do worse than to download today's '60s-styled, garage-y, ye-ye treats....
