Imagine my horror. Here I was inspired... (uh, no... bad choice of words...) Here I was COMPELLED BY DEMONIC FORCES to post on former SIXPENCE NONE THE RICHER lead singer LEIGH NASH, when I suddenly became reacquainted with the fact that said band and said singer are self-professed "Christian" artists. Good God. (Uh, no... yet another bad choice of words.)
Now, it's one thing to be an artist and a Christian; that probably describes most artists in the Western world. But to wear it on your sleeve... to pronounce it so proudly... to make it such an integral part of your persona.... Argh! Shiver me timbers! It just plain gives me the heebie jeebies. That is, when it's not giving me the screaming meemies.
But... I'd already committed to this post, and Ms. Nash's voice is so goshdarned pleasant and innocent.... Just chalk it up to this: The devil made me do it.

If you
1) assume that in order to be a christian one must believe in and attempt to adhere to the tenants of the bible, and
2) read the requirements stated in the bible necessary to be called "saved",
then I'd feel pretty safe in saying that very very few of the musicians in the western world are actually christian.
Though, I do see how one could easily make the case that they all think that they're christian, or even call themselves christian.
I’m a relatively new fan of Sixpence None the Richer, and more so of Leigh Nash’s new solo career. After having engaged with their music, then having sifted through countless websites related to their music, faith & personas, I’m fairly comfortable in asserting some things about what might make Leigh tick. I suppose also being a born-again Christian brings a certain kinship.
Here’s the thing…Neither Sixpence then, nor Leigh’s new solo career now represent high profile, aggressive evangelism. And Leigh has asserted this much from the band’s early years onward. SPNTR has always sought to make relevant & visceral pop music that is the overflow of the character and fancy of their lives…particularly of that of Matt Slocum (the founder). Leigh is carrying on in that tradition with the release of her new ‘folksy’ CD, Blue on Blue.
Though SPNTR has graced certain (mainstream evangelical) Christian worship productions, their own recording initiatives have always been very subdued when it comes to approaching the Gospel message. However, unquestionably both Matt and Leigh are (as Leigh described herself) ‘big fat Christians’; such being people who profess to trusting Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. Even so, SPNTR caught some ire from among elements within the Conservative Christian community for venturing deep into the domain of pop secular music.
IMO, the thing endearing Leigh Nash to me the most is her quintessential charm & zest for life that is fueled by the outworking of a life well-lived. She’s the ‘real deal’, a classy lady. Through it all she’s maintained an unpretentious godly humility in spite of the many pitfalls and landmines encountered along the way. And through it all Leigh espouses an undying love for her God, for her husband & for her son, and takes pleasure in politely making that known.
Leigh’s the cute girl next door with the million dollar voice! She’s a doll. Guess I sound a bit biased. LOL
